Vital Energi Apprenticeship Programme 2026– Low Carbon Heating Technician

The Opportunity

We are offering opportunities to study a Low Carbon Heating Technician L3 Apprenticeship.

You’ll get hands-on experience working on assets delivering O&M services on live sites, whilst studying towards a nationally recognised qualification.

You will personally help support the transition to net-zero by developing, installing, operating, and maintaining low-carbon systems such as air, ground & water source heat pumps alongside other emerging technologies. Learning how to apply engineering principles, ensure energy efficiency, and comply with safety and environmental standards. Apprentices will work with renewable systems, smart controls, and sustainable practices while building technical, problem-solving, and communication skills to support decarbonisation goals.

What you’ll do at work

  • Undertake planned preventative and reactive maintenance in accordance with Site Procedures
  • Operate and maintain plant and equipment in a safe & controlled manner
  • Preparing, installing, testing, and commissioning systems
  • Performing routine service and maintenance
  • Diagnosing and rectifying faults and if necessary, carrying out safe isolation procedures
  • Decommission heating and hot water systems
  • Decommission electrical and electrical control systems applicable to heating and hot water systems
  • Communicate at all levels, through different means of communication platforms (verbal and in writing)
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues, clients or stakeholders to solve problems

This is a physically demanding role that involves manual handling and may involve lifting heavy equipment, working at height, and in confined spaces. You’ll need to work both independently and as part of a close-knit team, liaising with site supervisors, colleagues and clients

Essential qualifications

GCSE Maths, English (Grade 4 (or equivalent) or above) essential

You will be required to drive a company vehicle for business use, so you must hold a full clean driving licence.

Let the company know about other relevant qualifications and industry experience you have. They can adjust the apprenticeship to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

This role may require periods of working away from home and travel to college. Most journeys involving travel and hotels are subsidised by Vital Energi.

After this apprenticeship

After completing the Low Carbon Heating Technician Apprenticeship, you'll be qualified to work as an O&M Technician, with opportunities to progress into senior or specialist roles such as O&M Engineer, commissioning technician, or technical support. With experience, you could move into supervisory or management positions. We encourage all of our employees to continue with their learning and there will be opportunities to work towards HNC, HND and Degree Level Apprenticeships were appropriate, upon completion of the Level 3 Apprenticeship.

Your training plan

  • You will study a Low Carbon Heating Technician L3 Apprenticeship
  • You will attend college on a day release or block release programme

Hours: 40 hours a week Hours, (Monday - Friday, 08.00 – 17.00 with 1 hour for lunch.)
Start date: September 2026
Duration: 36 months
Location: UK Wide
Training: An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.
